My current pet hate is when people use adjectives instead of adverbs: it’s “breathe happily” not “breathe happy”.
One of the teachers at school read us an example of a child using an adverb “I terrifically tore open my presents”. We laughed, but, I confess, I don’t know why that’s wrong. We’d say “I enjoyed that film terrifically” and “I eagerly tore open my presents”, but not “I enjoyed that film eagerly” nor “I terrifically tore open my presents”.
Perhaps someone will tell me why and why not …
